Why is PANNING useful?

Panning is one way of making sound travel from one side of the room to the other. It works with stereo waveforms. An easy way is to 'flatline' the wave in one channel (so that there is no sound coming from that side). There are also less dramatic panning pre-sets in this audio editor. See below.

This is the Spinet. Like the Harpsichord, its strings were plucked by plectrum-like devices in the instrument. The Piano, whose strings are struck, replaced most other keyboard instruments when it was invented in the 18th century.
